Keeping Instant Messages Off the Record

Instant messengers are a popular means of communication. They're easy to use, enables real-time conversations, and are completely unsecureed. Wait, they're not secure?! No, they're not. Every instant message you send can be read by anybody snooping your conversation, including your ISP, that creepy neighbor kid next door who keeps breaking into your wireless network, and any one of several shady government agencies (yeah, I know, they're all shady).

Fear not because there is an easy to use solution called Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging. OTR Messaging allows you to establish an encrypted channel with the person you're conversing with. This encrypted channel ensures anybody snooping on your conversation sees nothing but incomprehensible garbage.

You early birds who arrive on Friday will have a chance to learn about OTR Messaging (you latecomers can track me down during one of the OpenPGP Key Signing Parties and I'll probably be willing to explain OTR Messaging to you, although in a more drunken manner than this presentation).

“A main motivation for settling down and domesticating crops was probably to make an alcoholic beverage of some kind,” reports archaeologist Patrick McGovern. “People wanted to be closer to their plants so this leads to settlement.”

It may come as little surprise that the seeds of civilization sprouted from the desire for inebriating beverages. What superior reason exists to arise daily by noon? What greater motive could have prompted our ancestral neighbors to collaborate in the arduous cultivation, malting, and brewing required? None, of course, except the rational desire for uninterrupted access to sweet beer, and the time to drink it. And, while civilization continues to boast this agreeable advantage, its scope has expanded dramatically beyond this original legitimate purpose. Yes, from the froth on the stein of civilization emerged a maligned class of political savages; a species of inebriates whose thirst for power has left them little time for civil society, other than to conspire in its destruction. They grow in ranks by the fallacy that force can defeat them, or rhetoric, or political knavery. Such efforts, of course, are in vain. Beer has caused this disease, and beer is the only known cure.

With sufficient variety, quality, and volume, we can fortify the future of human civilization one carboy at a time. Join me for an adventure of brewing proportions as we face the onslaught of sobriety, and preserve for posterity the defining characteristic of humanity itself...the freedom to peacefully drink ourselves silly with large quantities of delicious home brewed beer.

On top of that, advertisement agencies are snooping on you so they can display targeted ads on your Facebook page the next time you login. These snoops could lead to future embarrassment or even blackmail.

Enter Tor, a network that allows you to browse for your sick shit anonymously. By bouncing your traffic between multiple nodes Tor prevents websites from identifying you. That means you won't see advertisements for STD cures on your Facebook page the next time you login. It also means that the government isn't going to threaten to tell the world about your freaky fetish in an attempt to employ you as an informant.

In this session you will download and install the Tor Browser Bundle (it's very easy), learn how to use it, and become acquainted with the wonderful world of hidden services (the underground of the Internet where the cool kids hangout).

There are a lot of snoopy people in the world who believe violating your privacy is their duty. Crooks and police officers, but I repeat myself, want to steal your electronic devices so they can find something to either blackmail you with or arrest you for.

Encrypting your data will prevent unauthorized persons from accessing it. Thieves will be left with unintelligible garbage that is useless for blackmail or prosecution. You, on the other hand, will have the magic key that will turn that unintelligible garbage into wonderfully useful data.

In this session I will explain how to use popular data encryption tools including TrueCrypt, FileVault, BitLocker, and dm-crypt. Encrypting data on mobile devices will also be covered. Chances are there is a secure way to store your data on your electronic device.

After attending the morning's OpenPGP sessions (shame on you if you didn't attend) you have your encryption keys in hand but you may still need it signed (if you don't know what any of this means just attend the OpenPGP session, I'll explain it). From 18:00 (06:00 PM) until I'm too inebriated to successfully operate a computer I will be hosting a mobile key signing party (and by mobile I mean I have no clue where I'll be so you have to find me).

If you want to get your OpenPGP key signed simply find me, convince me that you are who you say you are, and I'll sign your key. But this party isn't just for me, everybody who has an OpenPGP key can sign each others' keys! The goal of this event is to help people get to know each other so a web of trust (again, attend the OpenPGP session and I'll explain it) can be establish.

As we gather here today to celebrate agorism we should take a moment to remember those who went before us. Silent remembrances are the common way of paying respect to the dead but we're not common, are we? OpenPGP Hungover Key Signing Pity Party

Last night was rough. We all drank too much and now we have pounding headaches and a nauseous feeling in our stomaches. It's time for us to have a giant pity party.

From 10:00 (10:00 AM), or whenever I wake up, until I decide to leave AgoraFest I will be continuing the previous night's mobile key signing party. The same schtick applies for this party as the prior night's party: if you want your OpenPGP key signed simply find me, convince me that you are who you say you are (which will probably be easier now that I'm hung over), and I'll sign your key. Furthermore, other fellow OpenPGP key holders will also be able to sign your key.

The goal of this event is similar to the goal of the previous night's key signing party: help people to get to know each other so a web of trust can be established. On top of that you can also whine about how hungover you are with fellows who are equally hungover.
